We’re delighted to see Salt Salon at Borough Market shortlisted for the AJ Architecture Awards 2026, with S&G Shopfitters proud to have played a part in bringing this distinctive project to life.

Designed by Unknown Works, Salt Salon transforms three levels of a Victorian storehouse into something far removed from the traditional hair salon. The space combines highly considered interiors with sound and club culture, creating an environment where the experience is as important as the haircut itself.

A salon designed around sound and experience

Every element of Salt Salon has been carefully considered to create a unique atmosphere.

The design brings together the character of the original building with a contemporary, highly crafted interior. Sound plays a central role, with the salon designed as a listening environment as well as a working commercial space.

For S&G Shopfitters, the project required close attention to detail throughout the fit-out, translating an ambitious architectural concept into a finished space that works both creatively and practically.

A collaborative project

Projects of this nature rely on strong collaboration between everyone involved, and Salt Salon brought together a talented team:

Architecture & Design: Unknown Works
Loudspeaker & Sound: Friendly Pressure
Structure: Something Studio
Contractor: S&G Shopfitters
Photography: Henry Woide

The result is a genuinely individual space that challenges expectations of what a contemporary salon can be.

Recognition from the Architects’ Journal

Being shortlisted for the AJ Architecture Awards 2026 is fantastic recognition for the project and the work that went into creating it.

We’re proud to have contributed to Salt Salon and to see the finished project recognised alongside some of the UK’s most exciting architectural work.

Congratulations to Unknown Works, Salt Salon and everyone involved in bringing the project together.
